In October 2017, President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva visited Demirchi village of the Shamakhi district to review ongoing restoration and development work.

The restoration efforts in Demirchi were comprehensive. The village mosque, one of the oldest religious sites in the country, was originally built in 755 and was restored under the direction of President Ilham Aliyev.

The roof of the mosque was restored to its original design, ceilings were repaired and painted, and new doors and windows were installed. The collapsed domes, roof, mihrab, and “Guldeste” minaret were also reconstructed.
